HOW SHADOW PLAY BY PEPPERS GUESTS CAN TAKE ACTION
CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
Shadow Play by Peppers Acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Narrm, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and to Elders of all First Nations communities that visit Shadow Play by Peppers.
Shadow Play by Peppers is situated upon the homelands of the Yalukit William clan of the Boon Wurrung people. Also known as the ‘river home’ or ‘people of the river’ – the area stretching out to Port Phillip was once diverse wetlands. The wetlands were as diverse as those in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park and were rich in resources. In the 1830s, colonial settlers decided to drain the lagoon and form a lake known as Albert Park - SHadow Play by Peppers acknowledges that we are located in an area that is a culturally and spiritually significant site for the Wurrung people. Shadow Play is also positioned in close proximity to the Yarra River - a significant food source and meeting place for indigenous Australians from prehistoric times, initially called Birrarung by the Wurendjeri people.
Natural wonders need protection. Shadow Play by Peppers are proud members of the Yarra River Keepers Association which is an organisation playing a fundamental role in advocating for the Yarra, Birrarung River to be healthy, protected and loved.
Birrarung Wilam (River Camp) Walk – Public Tour
We recommend all guests to immerse themselves in local cultural experiences while staying at Shadow Play by Peppers.
Running each day, the Birrarung Wilam (River Camp) Walk, is open to everyone. The walk starts at 1.00 pm and takes guests through Federation Square and down to the Birrarung Wilam (River Camp) Aboriginal art installations. During the walk, you will learn about the Aboriginal history of the Birrarung Marr (Beside the river of mists) and the Aboriginal Peoples of the Kulin Nation, guided by one of our experienced Cultural Experiences Guides. They will explain how the land on which Melbourne stands has changed over time and the significance of the Birrarung Wilam to the local Kulin peoples. This will deepen your understanding of this incredible location, which is an important gathering place for the Kulin Nation and one of Melbourne’s most popular meeting hubs today.
